I Create The Balance

Today I saw a post on social media where someone asked, “Be honest. Who else had to work today?” At first I dismissed it because I no longer participate in the traditional 9-to-5 routine. However, I drifted back to it to see the responses.

My heart sank.

I remember the days of waiting for a day off so I could enjoy my time away from work. The frustrating part was that the needed time off came few and far between. At least that’s how it felt.

Then you cram everything into preparing for the day. Shopping, cooking, cleaning. When the day of solitude finally comes, there is very little peace in it. Sure, you spent time with loved ones, but with running errands, making preparations, and entertaining family and friends – your energy is spent. Sadly, you push through and go back to work even more exhausted than before or you end the festivities early so you can be rested for the fast-approaching workday.

Oh, the monotony.

I recently read about ‘guilt-free’ time off. That is what I currently enjoy and would not want to abandon for anyone. That does not mean I do not have obligations, deadlines, and bills. I do. I still live in reality. I still have to balance my household and manage our differing schedules.

So what makes my time ‘guilt-free’?

I get to arrange HOW most of these activities and days pan out. I no longer have to equate hour-long commutes and squeezing my family life around my concrete work schedule. I no longer have to ask for permission to access time off [time off that was described as a benefit in my employee handbook]. I no longer have to put work before my family.

I create the balance. I can schedule the downtime.

Could you ask your boss if you could equate a little bit of downtime in your day? If your boss is compassionate, you may be asked to bring a doctor’s statement to substantiate your request. Doubt it. Most likely, you will be redirected back to work or find yourself engaged in a discussion about your capability to fulfill the requirements of your job. Ouch.

I am so thankful that I am not chained to a job that absorbs so much of me, my time, and my autonomy. As a Female Preneur, I show up excited - fresh and ready. No more being burnt out. I have peace of mind. I get to give my family my time and full interest and still have time for ole Ché Ché.

That’s the beautiful freedom I get to enjoy on a daily basis...and I don’t take that for granted.
