Working Through The Tears

This morning I decided to make a quick run to a nearby store before starting my work day at 10:00 AM. When I arrived at the store, it was quiet with a few customers scattered about. I found my item and went to the register. No one was there. While waiting, I heard two women having a conversation. One said to the other, “Why are you at work today? You need to be home.” The other lady replied, “He told me I had to come in. What else could I do?” Then she glanced in my direction and started walking toward me.

She was the cashier.

She was silent, almost solemn.

The cashier rang up my item, and gave me my total. As I handed her my payment I said, “Hey, how are you doing?” She made a teeter-totter motion with hand. Then I noticed the tears in her eyes.

She counted back my change, and I felt compelled to share a word with her. “It gets better.” She offered a faint smile and broke into tears. I could only reach for her hand, and she obliged. Through our brief grasp, I shared an inaudible moment of consolation. Then I stepped away.

The cashier continued to cry as she helped the next customer in line.

I fought back tears as I got in my car. I remember having to work through pain when I was on my 9-to-5. I remembered having to work while my child was sick because I couldn’t get the day off. I remember having to stand in front of a team of administrators to facilitate a training when I simply wanted to break down in tears when my mother initially went on hospice care. I wanted to be with her, but I needed to ration my time for the days to come.

I gripped the steering wheel as the sun beamed on my face. While I did noble work and had some wonderful co-workers back in my on-the-job days, the workplace treated me badly. I had suppressed so many hurtful memories from those days.

Then I smiled. I realized that I am not in that same place.

I now have flexibility of when and where I work. I now can be a stronger balance keeper in my life, managing what is important to me. I no longer need permission to care for a sick loved one. I no longer need to submit a

doctor’s note to justify taking a sick day off. I make decisions on what is best for my business and my family. That's my WHY. Balance and Freedom

I am so blessed to be able to serve the people I want and choose to serve. I wake up ready to connect, share, and grow. That was my prayer back in 2010 and I thank God for allowing me to walk in the beauty of what I asked for.
